Protecting and Enhancing Habitat for Threatened Species
Since 2020, Brunswick Valley Landcare has spearheaded the Wildlife Safe Havens project, an initiative launched with post-fire funding from WIRES. This multi-year, multi-species project is dedicated to creating safe habitats for native wildlife, particularly focusing on glider species, large forest owls and the threatened Glossy Black-Cockatoo.
Project Genesis and Funding:
In close partnership with Wildbnb Wildlife Habitat, the project began with the objective of guiding landholders in habitat creation and nest box installations across 30 properties. Thanks to further funding from Landcare Australia and the generous contributions from Santos Organics, local business and donations from our community, we’ve expanded our efforts, extended the number of species and the reach of these important conservation activities.
WSH Habitat Restoration activities to date have included:
- Community Engagement and Education: Education and awareness raising on the needs of our hollow-dependant species including a fabulous Art-Meets-Habitat silent auction offering painted nest hollows and artworks to raise funds.
- Specialised Habitats: Installation of six specially designed hollows for the threatened Glossy Black-Cockatoo, a species that requires nesting hollows 1.5m deep. Installation of large hollows targeting Forest Owls and threatened large glider species, like the Greater Glider and yellow-bellied Glider.
- Habitat Restoration: Salvaging felled trees from approved tree removal to return crafted Hunks of Trunk hollows back to those areas, restoring hollow availability in the wake of initial hollow loss for arboreal mammal, bird, insect, reptile and microbat species.
- Ongoing Monitoring: Continuing observation and upkeep of nest boxes that have been installed across Byron Shire since 2016, through other previously funded projects and Wildlife Safe Havens initiatives.
Wildlife Safe Havens is an ongoing crowdfunding program continuing to focus on our native hollow dependant species. Click here to make your donation today, our goal is to reach $100,000! Chuffed-Wildlife-Safe-Havens
